Colour temperature describes whether white light appears warmer or cooler. It is measured in kelvin, written as K. A lower number usually appears warmer and more amber. A higher number usually appears cooler and whiter.
The number does not tell you how bright a lamp is. It also does not describe colour rendering, beam direction or glare. Those are separate qualities.
How the three common warm ranges differ
- 2700K: distinctly warm, often associated with relaxed living rooms, bedrooms and hospitality spaces.
- 3000K: warm but a little clearer and less amber than 2700K. It can work across homes, dining areas and reception spaces.
- 3500K: a warm-neutral transition. It can feel cleaner than 3000K while remaining softer than many cooler white sources.
These descriptions are comparative, not absolute. The same 3500K source can appear warmer beside daylight and cooler beside a 2700K lamp.
Why walls and furniture change the result
Light is affected by everything it strikes. Warm timber, terracotta and cream paint may make a source feel warmer. Grey stone, white walls and polished metal may make it feel more neutral. Dark finishes absorb more light, while pale matte surfaces return more of it to the room.
That is why a colour-temperature decision should be tested with the room's actual surfaces whenever possible.
Colour temperature is not colour accuracy
Two lamps can both be 3000K and still render fabrics, food and skin differently. Colour rendering describes how faithfully a light source reveals colours. When colour judgment matters, consider colour rendering as well as colour temperature.
Do not trust one phone photograph
Phone cameras automatically change exposure and white balance. A photograph can make a warm lamp look neutral or make a neutral lamp look orange. Product images are useful for understanding form and placement, but a single photograph should not be treated as a calibrated colour sample.
A simple selection process
- List the activities that happen in the room.
- Observe the room in daylight and after sunset.
- Note the dominant finishes, especially walls, table surfaces and flooring.
- Compare the proposed light with any existing lamps that will remain in use.
- Test one source in the real location before standardising an entire room or café.
When mixing colour temperatures
Mixing is not automatically wrong. A focused task light may differ from decorative background light. Problems usually appear when neighbouring sources are close together, equally visible and unintentionally mismatched.
